Petrus de Beer, a classically trained violinist,  holds an MMus from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama which he obtained after winning an international scholarship.

Piet, who studied with Jack de Wet, Simon Fischer and Ludmilla Igniatieva. was principal second violin from 2003 to 2005 and returned to the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in the first violin section on March 1, 2022, and he’s glad to be back with his “old family of esteemed colleagues and friends”.

He has also taught violin and viola at various leading music schools (Hugo Lambrechts and Beau Soleil ) and at the University of Stellenbosch. During his time away from the CPO (when he continued to play as an ad hoc musician), he freelanced in various combinations and styles, ranging from Classical, Blues and Jazz.  He has made numerous recordings for television, radio, CD and DVD. He is a member of the US Camerata and various other groups and has collaborated and recorded with artists such as David Kramer, Arno Carstens, Zanne Stapelberg, Kathleen Tagg both here and abroad.

With his band, Z World Café with Schalk Joubert (bass)  and Stanislav Angelov (bandoleon), Piet performed a unique version of Vivaldi’s 4 Seasons to a sold out audience at the Klein Karoo Klassique. The band’s long-awaited CD, 4Seisoene/ 4 Seasons was released in 2016 to great acclaim, and the KKNK show was recorded for Kyknet and was featured on Oppiestoep.
